NICOLE Kidman, the celebrated Oscar-winning actress, recently opened up about her time spent on the iconic film ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and its connection to her marriage with actor Tom Cruise. As the 25th anniversary of the film approaches, Kidman’s reflections have provided a glimpse into how her real-life relationship may have influenced her character in the movie directed by the visionary Stanley Kubrick.

In a recent interview with a prominent publication, Kidman shared her thoughts on whether Kubrick had drawn upon her marriage for inspiration while crafting the story of Bill and Alice Harford, the film’s central couple. Kidman and Cruise were married for nearly five years, having adopted children during their time together, before ultimately separating in 2001, shortly after the film’s release.

Kidman stated, “I suppose he was mining it. There were ideas he was interested in. He’d ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling.” She went on to recount how Kubrick recognized the complexities involved in creating a love triangle, saying, “Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it’s a triangle. Because one person could feel ganged up on.” Kidman noted that the late director was attuned to managing the dynamics between the actors during filming.

The filming experience itself was rich with shared moments between Kidman and Cruise, even as they navigated the pressures of a lengthy production. “We had a home 10 minutes away, but we lived in that trailer. Tom and I shared it because Stanley would say, ‘You’re not each getting a trailer. We can’t afford it,’” Kidman reminisced. She recalled how Cruise had a smaller area within the trailer since he was “running stuff” and would often play video games, particularly during a time when ‘Minesweeper’ was quite popular.

Despite the intense nature of filming, Kidman said that the couple found ways to bond and relieve stress. “We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning,” she recalled with a smile, emphasizing that such moments helped maintain a sense of fun amidst the demanding schedule.

Fast forward to the present, and Kidman has moved on in her life, now married to musician Keith Urban. Together, they have two daughters, Sunday and Faith, who are now teenagers. However, when it comes to sharing the film ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ with her children, Kidman firmly put her foot down. “Definitely not,” she laughed when asked if it would make a family movie night option.

Kidman recounted a humorous yet cringe-worthy moment at the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony where she was being honored, and her daughters witnessed a scene from the film where she appeared to be under the influence of marijuana. “I sat next to my daughter, Sunday, watching that,” she said, reflecting on how she felt watching that moment with her daughter.

While Kidman may not want to share the film with her kids, she is open to public family appearances, as evidenced by her daughters’ recent long-awaited red carpet debut. In April, both Sunday and Faith attended the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony, which was hosted in honor of their mother. Kidman expressed how it felt special to have her family present, noting that they are now old enough to comprehend the significance of such events.

“To be able to do this with my family around me gives it such balance,” she remarked, adding that it provides a grounding experience amidst her busy career. Kidman cherishes these family moments, especially as they continue to grow and evolve.

In sharing her thoughts around ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and the memories tied to it, Kidman gives fans not only insight into her past but also the balancing act of motherhood, career, and the remnants of her public relationship with Cruise.
