Nigerian Music Icon Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away After Performance

Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has sadly passed away. The news broke on Tuesday evening after she collapsed shortly after performing at a birthday party in Lagos.

Eyewitnesses reported that Onyeka was celebrating her friend Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday when she took to the stage to entertain guests. After her performance, she returned to her seat but suddenly fell ill and collapsed.

Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and rushed her to Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, but sadly, she could not be saved. The exact cause of her death has not yet been confirmed, leaving many fans in shock.

At 72 years old, Onyeka Onwenu was a multi-talented artist with a remarkable career that spanned over four decades. She was not just a talented singer, but also an actress, journalist, and politician.

Onyeka was known for her ability to blend various music styles including reggae, pop, and highlife. Her songs often addressed social and political themes, and some of her most popular tracks included “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”

In addition to her music career, Onyeka Onwenu was involved in politics. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and even held the position of Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development.

Earlier this year, Onyeka expressed her excitement about producing a movie that would showcase her experiences in the music industry over the years. She wanted to share her personal journey and highlight how Nigerian music has evolved over time.
