Nigerian Politician Joe Igbokwe Criticizes Economic Policies Amid Rising Costs
Joe Igbokwe, a notable figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu, recently expressed his concerns regarding the current economic situation in Nigeria. In a Facebook post, Igbokwe lamented the soaring cost of living, notably highlighting the price of a bag of rice, which he stated has risen to N100,000.
In his social media commentary, Igbokwe, who played an active role in campaigning for Tinubu in the 2023 general elections, suggested that the individuals capable of resolving Nigeria’s economic challenges have not yet been born. This statement marks a notable shift in Igbokwe’s stance, as he has been a steadfast supporter of the administration.
Igbokwe, who has served under several governors in Lagos State since 1999, has recently voiced his dissatisfaction with some policies implemented by the Tinubu administration. Only two weeks ago, he publicly criticized the recent increase in electricity tariffs, urging President Tinubu to intervene. “PBAT, please look into the new electricity tariff in Nigeria. It will kill businesses if the government does not act as quickly as possible,” Igbokwe wrote.
In a separate post three weeks ago, Igbokwe shared his frustration regarding the cost of electricity, which he claimed has become prohibitively expensive. He noted that N20,000 worth of electricity units now lasts just one day at his Surulere office, where he operates with several air conditioning units. He referred to this new tariff group as the ‘band A group’ and called for a reassessment of these charges.
The comments made by Igbokwe have stirred conversations on social media platforms, revealing a growing discontent among some supporters of the current administration concerning its socio-economic policies.
