Ninja Gaiden 4 Announced, Set for Fall 2025 Release
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Ninja Gaiden 4, the long-awaited sequel in the iconic action game series, was revealed as the surprise fourth game showcased at Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Direct 2025. The game is set to launch in fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Developed by PlatinumGames, known for titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, in collaboration with Team Ninja, Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces a new main playable character named Yakumo. However, series protagonist Ryu Hayabusa will also play a significant role in the story and be playable throughout the game. The sequel is set in a cyberpunk-inspired Tokyo, marking a fresh direction for the franchise.
Fumihiko Yasuda, head of Team Ninja, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “Fans have long been asking us for a new NINJA GAIDEN game. Koei Tecmo‘s President, Hisashi Koinuma, and PlatinumGames’ CEO, Atsushi Inaba, share a close relationship, which led us to explore a collaborative development effort.” Yasuda also credited Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer for supporting the partnership.
In addition to Ninja Gaiden 4, Team Ninja is working on an Unreal Engine 5 remaster of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, which is already available on Xbox Game Pass. The announcement comes 13 years after the release of Ninja Gaiden 3, which launched in 2012. Since then, the series has seen a spin-off, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, and a compilation titled Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection.
The Ninja Gaiden series has a storied history with Xbox, beginning with the 2004 reboot that introduced Ryu Hayabusa to a new generation of gamers. Ninja Gaiden 2, released in 2008, was published by Microsoft Game Studios, further cementing the franchise’s ties to the platform.
With Ninja Gaiden 4, fans can expect a blend of PlatinumGames’ signature action gameplay and Team Ninja’s expertise in crafting challenging combat experiences. The game’s release in 2025 will mark a new chapter for the beloved series, promising to deliver both nostalgia and innovation.
