Nintendo Switch 2 Leaks Suggest New Joy-Con Optical Sensor Feature
Recent leaks of the Nintendo Switch 2 have sparked speculation about a potential new feature in the console’s Joy-Con controllers. Images circulating online appear to show an optical sensor on the side of the new Joy-Con, similar to those found on PC mice. This has led to theories that the controllers could function like a mouse when placed on a surface, offering enhanced precision for gaming and navigation.
The leaked images, shared by industry insider Laura Kate Dale, also reveal details about the console’s dock, including input and output voltage information. The dock will reportedly require a 60W charger, making it incompatible with the current Nintendo Switch’s charging cable. This suggests significant hardware upgrades for the upcoming console.
While the optical sensor feature remains unconfirmed, its potential utility is clear. It could provide more precise controls for games, particularly those requiring fast and accurate aiming. Additionally, it could simplify navigation through complex user interfaces or web browsers, aligning with rumors of a revamped UI or integrated social media features.
However, skepticism remains. The original Joy-Con’s infrared camera saw limited use, primarily in a single minigame and basic eShop software. There is no guarantee that the optical sensor, if real, will be widely utilized in the Nintendo Switch 2.
Other leaks have provided glimpses of the console’s motherboard, confirming the use of a T239 chip produced by Samsung. While the process node is still unknown, experts speculate it could be an 8nm system-on-chip (SoC). Despite the flood of leaks, Nintendo has yet to officially announce the Switch 2, though an announcement appears imminent.
