Nintendo Switch 2 Leaks Suggest May 2025 Launch, New Features
TOKYO, Japan — Nintendo’s highly anticipated Switch 2 console may be revealed as early as this week, according to leaks from prominent gaming insiders. The company reportedly plans to unveil the next-generation console on January 16, 2024, with a hardware-focused trailer, followed by a software-focused Direct presentation in February or March.
Leaker ‘Nate the Hate‘ and industry outlet VGC corroborated the timeline, suggesting a potential launch window of May or June 2025. The Switch 2 is expected to feature significant upgrades, including 12GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and support for MicroSD Express cards. A new Mario Kart game and a 3D Mario title are rumored to launch alongside the console, with other major titles like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Final Fantasy 7 Remake also in development.
Recent leaks have fueled speculation about the console’s design and features. Images posted on Chinese social media and shared on Reddit show redesigned Joy-Con controllers with larger buttons and electromagnetic suction mechanisms, replacing the current railed lock system. The console itself is rumored to have a larger screen, USB-C ports on the top and bottom, and a mysterious new “C” button on the right Joy-Con.
At CES 2025, accessory maker Genki showcased a mockup of the Switch 2, sparking a reported legal confrontation with Nintendo. French journalist Julien Tellouck revealed that Nintendo’s lawyers approached Genki, though the company claimed it had no formal agreements with Nintendo and based its designs on unofficial leaks. Nintendo later issued a statement clarifying that Genki’s mockup was unofficial and not endorsed by the company.
Despite the leaks, Nintendo has remained tight-lipped about the Switch 2. A patent filed in July 2023 and published last week hints at AI image upscaling technology, which could enable 4K textures while keeping game file sizes small enough for physical cartridges. Fans are eagerly awaiting an official announcement, with speculation pointing to a potential reveal this month.
As the gaming community pieces together information from leaks and patents, the Switch 2’s rumored features and launch timeline continue to generate excitement. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm any details, leaving fans to wait for an official announcement.
