North Carolina Democrats Face Challenges After Judicial Victory

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Last week, North Carolina Democrats celebrated a win when Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin conceded defeat in his Supreme Court race after a lengthy legal battle. However, that victory was overshadowed by the loss of control over the state board that dictates voting rules and oversees election disputes. This board has significant influence over election processes and outcomes.
The Republican-controlled state legislature passed a law transferring the appointment power for board members from the Democratic governor to the Republican state auditor. The change is expected to affect upcoming elections by making it easier for challenges like Griffin’s to succeed while limiting access to early voting.
Experts warn that the new Republican majority on the board will likely tilt the voting process in favor of GOP candidates. Gene Nichol, a law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, commented that the control shift will advantage the GOP in elections, emphasizing that “the party that controls the board holds significant power over who votes and how those votes are counted.”
The board’s initial actions included firing Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director, and appointing a new chair who has links to conservative groups. Bell, speaking out after her dismissal, noted the challenges faced by election officials amid an increasingly hostile political climate.
As North Carolina heads towards the 2024 elections, the impact of these changes could be profound. The state has been a critical swing state in recent elections, and modifications to election laws and procedures may significantly affect electoral outcomes.
Ann Webb, policy director for Common Cause North Carolina, expressed concerns that the new board might enforce stricter voter registration requirements potentially disenfranchising eligible voters. Conversely, Mitch Kokai from the John Locke Foundation claimed that such fears are exaggerated.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Democratic Party is gearing up for future battles, with plans for a statewide push to win judicial races in 2026 already underway, signifying that the struggle for voting rights and fair elections in North Carolina is far from over.
