2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

The highly-anticipated return of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. However, some of the brand’s most iconic figures were noticeably absent. The event, famous for its glamorous showcase of the ‘Angels,’ failed to feature several well-known models who have long been associated with the brand, raising questions about their absence.

Following its cancellation in 2019 amid diversity criticisms, Victoria’s Secret rebranded and announced an inclusive approach for its return. The 2024 event embraced a global stage, with events held in cities such as Barcelona, London, Tokyo, Lagos, and Bogotá. The brand emphasized a commitment to reflect its new vision through an Instagram statement: “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is ✨ BACK ✨ and will reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love—the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment, and more!”

Supermodel Heidi Klum, who first became a Victoria's Secret Angel in 1999, opted out of the 2024 show. Klum, who famously wore the $11 million “Very Sexy Fantasy Bra,” now represents the lingerie brand Intimissimi, signifying a potential conflict of interest. On the same day as the Victoria’s Secret event, she launched a campaign alongside her daughter, Leni.

Gisele Bündchen, another former Angel, also chose not to participate. Despite reuniting with the brand in 2023 to promote its new image, Bündchen has been vocal about her preference for editorial over runway work. “I have zero desire to walk a catwalk again,” she stated in 2022, expressing instead a passion for exploring different creative avenues.

Australian model Miranda Kerr, once dubbed “a consummate professional” by Victoria’s Secret executives, has shifted her focus to her businesses, including the successful Kora Organics. Meanwhile, Karlie Kloss, who severed ties with the brand in 2015 following a reassessment of her personal values, aligns her current endeavors with feminist beliefs and tech education initiatives.

Other models such as Kendall Jenner and Taylor Hill have maintained their fashion industry presence through partnerships with other major brands, further illustrating the varied career paths models have undertaken post-Victoria’s Secret.

The show did feature Tyra Banks, marking her return since 2005, in addition to performances by prominent musical acts, enhancing the event’s entertainment value. Despite mixed responses, this year’s show demonstrated an industry shift towards broader representation and renewed brand identity.
