NYT’s Connections Game Captivates Players with Daily Word Challenges
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New York Times‘ daily word game, Connections, has become a social media sensation, captivating players with its unique blend of word association and puzzle-solving. Launched as part of the Times’ Games section, the game challenges players to find common threads between 16 words, grouping them into four categories of four words each.
Connections, created by associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu, resets at midnight every day, offering a fresh puzzle for players to tackle. The game is accessible via the Times’ website and mobile app, making it easy for users to play on the go. Each puzzle features words that can be grouped into categories such as book titles, software, or country names, with only one correct solution per puzzle.
Players are given four attempts to correctly group the words. If they make a mistake, they lose a life, and after four errors, the game ends. The groups are color-coded by difficulty, with yellow being the easiest and purple the most challenging. The purple group often involves wordplay, adding an extra layer of complexity.
“It’s a fun way to start the day,” said Kris Holt, a writer who covers video games and word games. “The game requires you to think outside the box and make connections that aren’t immediately obvious.”
Connections has quickly gained a dedicated following, with players sharing their results on social media and group chats. The game’s archive, available to NYT All Access or Games subscribers, allows players to revisit past puzzles and hone their skills.
Today’s puzzle, #584, featured words like VEHICLE, ROBOT, and PERFECT, challenging players to find the links between them. Holt shared his experience with the game, noting that he initially struggled with the purple group but eventually found the correct connections. “It’s all about persistence and a bit of creativity,” he said.
As Connections continues to grow in popularity, it joins other word games like Wordle and Strands in the Times’ expanding portfolio of daily puzzles. With its engaging gameplay and social sharing features, Connections is poised to remain a favorite among word game enthusiasts.
