PELHAM – A significant chapter in Alabama’s music history may have concluded as Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone performed what could be the final concert at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre on Tuesday, October 15. The venue, a central figure in Alabama’s music scene for 39 years, is facing an uncertain future amidst recent developments in the regional entertainment landscape.

During a sold-out concert, part of Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion Tour, the artist hinted at the venue’s possible closure. “I heard that this may be the last show here, so thanks for making this a fantastic night,” he told the energetic audience, following an encore performance of his hit song “Sunflower.” Concertgoers left with posters commemorating the venue’s storied history, featuring a roster of notable performers since its opening.

The Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, owned by Live Nation, has been a staple for live music events, hosting more than 500 concerts and attracting over three million patrons since 1986. Despite its rich history, the future of the amphitheater remains undecided. Earlier social media posts suggested the Post Malone concert would be its final show, but Live Nation has yet to confirm or deny plans for the 2025 season.

The uncertainty surrounding the venue follows a $50 million agreement between Live Nation and the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) to construct a new amphitheater in Birmingham’s Druid Hills area. Scheduled to open in summer 2025, the Birmingham Amphitheater has already secured its first show, featuring artist Teddy Swims.

Pelham City Manager Gretchen DiFante expressed uncertainty regarding the venue’s status but emphasized the city’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with Live Nation. “We don’t know what is going to happen,” DiFante stated. “If the time comes for them to be doing something else, we will work with them diligently to ensure that the property benefits the city of Pelham.”

Attendees at the Post Malone concert reflected on the value and memories the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre has provided. Bronson, a relatively new resident, remarked, “We’ve always enjoyed it here because the venue is close to where we live. We’re going to miss it if it closes.” Similarly, longtime concertgoer Alexander Long praised the venue’s setup for enhancing the concert-going experience.

Throughout its operation, the amphitheater has offered performances by a wide range of artists, from Taylor Swift and Bob Dylan to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Snoop Dogg. In 2024, it hosted concerts by Hozier, Staind, and Creed, among others, along with a closing event featuring Post Malone.

Post Malone’s performance was a blend of new material from his country-inspired album “F-1 Trillion” and beloved hits, backdropped by his new band, The Fools For You. The artist concluded with an encore of “Sunflower,” which could be the final note ever played at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre.
