Obituaries: Remembering Richard Harding and Andrew Milne
It is with heavy hearts that the passing of Richard Ernest Harding has been announced, who died on September 22, 2024. Richard was born in Vancouver to parents Ernest and Eleanor Harding on October 31, 1944. Predeceased by both his parents, his sister Joan, and his partner Guss, Richard leaves behind many friends in Vancouver, Midway, and Kelowna, B.C. Gratitude is extended to the care team and doctors at Hardy View Lodge in Grand Forks, B.C. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, no service will be held. Andrew Donald Milne, aged 86, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024. He is survived by his sisters Sheila Leach and Nancy Milne, and several nieces and nephews. Born in North Bay, Ontario, on July 6, 1938, to Donald Weir Milne and Dorothy Janet Moodie, Andrew faced the loss of his mother at a young age. He cherished family vacations and summers at their Trout Lake cottage. An alumnus of MIT, UofT, and UBC, Andrew earned degrees in Architecture and Economics and worked with mentor Arthur Erickson. Known fondly as Andy, he took pride in his Fort Langley home and his place in history as a founding member of The John A. Macdonald Society.
Andrew was a prolific figure in his community, working as a self-employed architectural and planning consultant. His career included service as an alderman and on various boards, and he was instrumental in professionalizing the geoduck industry through the Underwater Harvesters Association. Despite his achievements, those who knew him remember Andrew for his kindness, wit, and passionate interests in history, travel, and wine. His obituary has been posted online as of October 8, 2024.
