Larry The Cat At Downing Street

Senior officials at 10 Downing Street have developed a communication plan in anticipation of the eventual passing of Larry the cat, the long-term resident and Chief Mouser at the British Prime Minister’s residence.

The plan, known by the code name ‘Larry’s Bridges,’ draws a poignant parallel to the preparations for public announcements regarding the deaths of senior members of the royal family. For instance, the plans for announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II were referred to as Operation London Bridge.

Despite being a pet, Larry has held a significant place in British culture since his arrival in Downing Street during Prime Minister David Cameron’s tenure in 2011. He was appointed ‘in charge of mice’ and has remained a beloved figure through subsequent administrations.

Larry continued his duties at Downing Street after Prime Minister Cameron and his family moved out. Over the years, he has outlasted several prime ministers, including Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak.

An unnamed source from The Times confirmed that the ‘Larry Bridges’ plan aims to address the sensitive nature of the announcement when it becomes necessary to inform the public about Larry’s death.

Reportedly, officials plan to use the phrase ‘Larry bridges’ as a coded signal, reminiscent of the phrase ‘London Bridge is falling down,’ which was used for the announcement of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Since his adoption from Battersea Cats Home, Larry has become a fixture at Number 10, known for his patrols and occasional interactions with local wildlife, including his noteworthy encounters with Palmerston, the cat from the Foreign Office.

Larry has captured the hearts of the Great British public, receiving gifts and treats daily, and continues to engage with guests and oversee security at Downing Street.
