Omar Abdullah Set to Become J&K Chief Minister with Landmark NC Victory
The Vice-President of the National Conference (NC), Omar Abdullah, is preparing to assume the role of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following an impressive election outcome. The NC-led alliance secured a significant victory in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, capturing 49 of the 90 seats. Of these, the National Conference won 42 seats, while its ally, the Congress Party, secured six.
Speaking in an interview, Abdullah reflected on the election results, stating, “The verdict is humbling and a great responsibility. People expect visible change, and we must meet those expectations.” He expressed a tempered enthusiasm, noting that post-election responsibilities include navigating the complexities of a Union Territory government and working with the Lieutenant Governor.
Abdullah also addressed the NC’s stance on Article 370, stating, “We have always said this is a fight extending to a change of government at the Centre. It’s our duty to keep the issue alive.” However, he emphasized the importance of focusing on immediate priorities, such as the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
The role of the Congress in the coalition was also discussed. Abdullah noted, “The Congress is figuring out its role regarding the coalition.” He further said that the coalition’s agenda should not be minimalistic, but rather aim for the maximum that can be achieved for the region.
Abdullah highlighted the NC’s successful strike rate in the elections, winning 42 of the 56 seats it contested, describing it as a 75% success rate. He also pointed out the necessity for bureaucrats to be accountable to the newly elected government, stating, “Statehood has to be restored, and bureaucrats must respond to elected representatives.”
In terms of cooperation with the Union government, Abdullah expressed a willingness for constructive engagement, remarking, “We are aiming for a good, healthy working relationship. The government and the people of Jammu and Kashmir should not have to contend with unnecessary conflicts from day one.”
Further, Abdullah reiterated his government’s commitment to representing all communities, including those in Jammu and the 70% of Srinagar residents who did not vote. “We are a government for all people, regardless of who they voted for,” he asserted.
