Opinion: Debating Billups and Grant in Blazers’ Future

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — The Blazers’ fan community has varied opinions about the direction of the team as the 2025 season begins. Some agree on many points, but this commentary aims to highlight perspectives that diverge from the mainstream.
Two years ago, I might have laughed at the idea of discussing Chauncey Billups‘ coaching trajectory. Now, however, I find that he has morphed into a coach whose teams play hard and maintain cohesion—even during tough times without winning. Billups has become more than just a rookie coach; he is shaping a unique team culture.
Under Billups, there have been fewer leaks of drama to the media, a sign of a well-managed locker room. While players have shown signs of disengagement at times, Billups has frequently brought them back on track. Fan criticism regarding player development often ignores the progress young talent like Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija have made under his guidance.
While I still question his game management, particularly in crucial moments, the decisions he has made recently generally seem defendable. He may not be perfect, but in the competitive landscape of the NBA, I consider him above average.
As for Jerami Grant, opinions are mixed. Many fans express disappointment in his prior season but dismiss his capabilities too quickly. If Grant improves his shooting slightly, he remains a valuable player. Critics must also recognize that each player is responsible for showcasing their readiness to progress, not Grant alone.
Despite the call for Grant to possibly come off the bench, having a veteran player of his stature brings necessary stability to a young team. The reality of his contract may be unpleasant, but Grant finds himself in a pivotal role at a critical juncture for the Blazers.
Looking at the rookie Hansen, excitement builds. He exhibits potential, though he is still developing. Fans should watch for his evolution and contributions, not expecting immediate stardom but appreciating moments of brilliance.
In summary, while sentiments vary individually, discussions surrounding the Blazers and their prospects this season are essential. Fans should engage respectfully, sharing all views on team development, coaching strategies, and player performance.
