Origin I Squads Revealed: Queensland’s Shocking Omissions and Debutants
Billy Slater, the head coach of the Queensland Maroons, has made some surprising decisions in the selection of the squad for Origin I, revealing omissions and debutants in the 20-man squad.
Notably, David Fifita, the incumbent back-rower, has missed out on selection, while Tom Dearden secures the vacant No. 6 jersey. Jaydn Su’A steps in for Fifita in the back row, alongside Felise Kaufusi and Brendan Piakura.
Fifita’s absence from the squad altogether is a significant development, with the Maroons opting for Harry Grant, J’maine Hopgood, Mo Fotuaika, and Selwyn Cobbo on the bench.
Slater defended the decision to leave out Fifita, citing a drop in performance from last year as a contributing factor.
The absence of key players such as Cameron Munster, Tom Gilbert, Tino Fa’asuamalaeui, Tom Flegler, Kalyn Ponga, and AJ Brimson due to injuries presents challenges for the Maroons.
With Munster out, Dearden partners Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves, while Cobbo’s versatility earns him a spot on the bench.
Reece Walsh‘s fitness was a concern but the fullback proved his readiness in the recent Broncos vs. Titans game. Piakura and Ezra Mam also join the extended squad for future prospects.
The 20-man squad features new faces and experienced players, setting the stage for an intriguing Origin clash.
