Oscar Nominations Deadline Looms as Academy Prepares Virtual Announcement
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Academy members have until 5 p.m. PT today, January 17, to cast their ballots for the 97th Academy Awards nominations, marking the final deadline after multiple extensions due to unforeseen circumstances. The original deadline was set for January 12, but was pushed to January 14 and ultimately extended to today.
In recent days, voters have faced challenges, including personal distractions and external events, leading some to delay their decisions. Despite these hurdles, the Academy has confirmed that no further extensions will be granted. The nominations will be announced virtually on Thursday, January 23, at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET, a departure from the originally planned in-person event at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The announcement will be livestreamed globally on the Academy’s digital platforms, as well as on ABC’s Good Morning America, ABC News Live, Disney+, and Hulu. The nominations will be revealed in two segments, covering all 23 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and acting honors.
“This year’s process has been unique, but we’re committed to ensuring every vote counts,” said an Academy spokesperson. The virtual format was adopted to accommodate logistical challenges and ensure the safety of all participants.
The first segment of the announcement will include categories such as Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay, while the second will reveal nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture, among others. The full schedule is available on the Academy’s official website.
As the clock ticks down, voters are urged to submit their ballots promptly to ensure their voices are heard in this year’s historic awards season.
