Oscars 2025 to Stream on Hulu, But With a Delay
In a significant move for streaming and broadcast television, ABC has announced that the 2025 Oscars telecast will be available on Hulu, although with a notable delay. The ceremony, scheduled for March 2, 2025, will air live on ABC stations as usual, but Hulu users will have to wait until March 3, 2025, to watch a taped version of the event.
This decision follows the common practice of many network-level shows, which often become available on streaming platforms a day after their initial broadcast. This model is partly due to agreements with local affiliates and cable and satellite providers, ensuring these entities maintain an advantage by offering new content first.
However, viewers will have the option to watch the Oscars live on virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs) that carry ABC stations, such as Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV. These services operate under a subscription-based model similar to traditional cable and satellite providers.
The decision to not stream the Oscars live on Hulu, outside of its live TV offering, is likely influenced by complex licensing rights and the need to maintain good relations with MVPD and affiliate partners. Streaming and linear rights for high-profile events like the Oscars are often sold separately, adding to the complexity.
Despite declining ratings for major awards shows in recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest, partly driven by popular TV series and films on both linear and streaming platforms. Live events, including awards shows, continue to be a strong draw for both linear TV and streaming services.
