Charterhouse Lagos, a new primary school set to open its doors in September, has stirred controversy among Nigerians after unveiling its exorbitant fees for prospective pupils aged five to eight. The school, inspired by its UK counterpart Charterhouse School, promises to provide children with ‘an unparalleled advantage to develop and achieve their academic and social potential’.

With slogans like ‘Privilege, Prestige, Presence’ and ‘Inspired by Britain, delivered in Lagos,’ parents are beginning to raise eyebrows over the anticipated launch of Charterhouse Lagos in Lekki, where construction is still ongoing. However, it is the financial figures attached to the institution that have ignited a firestorm of reactions on social media.

Prospective pupils are required to undergo a process of ‘registration and validation’ to ensure eligibility for application, followed by a jaw-dropping application fee of ₦2 million to Charterhouse Lagos, which notably does not cover tuition costs.

The annual tuition fees presented to parents are equally staggering, with the standard rate set at ₦42 million. For a select few ‘founding students,’ a slightly discounted fee of ₦31.5 million is available, with the promise of unlocking ‘social potential’ tailored for success.

The announcement of Charterhouse Lagos fees has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many expressing outrage and disbelief at the astronomical figures targeted at parents seeking quality education for their children.
