NEW DELHI, India — YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, known as Beerbiceps, faced mounting backlash Tuesday following controversial remarks made during comedian Samay Raina‘s YouTube show, ‘India’s Got Latent.’ Allahbadia publicly apologized for what he described as a ‘lapse in judgment,’ as politicians and civil rights organizations demanded accountability and action against him.
The incident has ignited significant public outcry, with numerous complaints filed against the 31-year-old podcaster after his remarks led to public discussions about the responsibility of content creators. A team from Mumbai Police visited Allahbadia’s residence as part of an ongoing investigation, amid calls for stricter measures against inappropriate content.
Allahbadia’s comments, perceived as crude and offensive, quickly went viral, attracting criticism from various quarters including the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. AICWA President Suresh Gupta emphasized that action should be taken against ‘self-proclaimed content creators’ like Allahbadia, while Fadnavis noted, ‘Freedom of speech ends when you encroach upon others’ rights.’
Politicians such as Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and BJD MP Sasmit Patra have publicly condemned Allahbadia’s remarks. Chaturvedi stated, ‘If these content creators don’t self-regulate, they force the state to intervene,’ and vowed to address the issue in a parliamentary committee.
The show featuring Allahbadia’s comments has been removed from YouTube following orders from the government. According to Kanchan Gupta, a senior advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, such action was necessary to address the uproar it caused.
Allahbadia’s controversial statements also drew a strong reaction from the National Commission for Women (NCW), which called for immediate action to combat obscene content on social media and OTT platforms. The organization stressed these remarks threaten the safety and dignity of women and children and called for strict enforcement of content moderation.
In his apology, Allahbadia acknowledged the negative impact of his words, stating, ‘Comedy isn’t my forte. There’s no justification for my lapse in judgment,’ and stated that he respects family values.
His comments have led to broader discussions about censorship and accountability for online creators, with various political figures and organizations advocating for changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the investigation continues, many are left wondering how this will affect the future of content creation on platforms like YouTube.
