PS5 Outsells Rival Consoles in U.S. Market, Xbox Struggles

REDMOND, Wash. — New sales statistics reveal that Sony’s PlayStation 5 is significantly outperforming its competitor consoles in the United States, according to Circana‘s video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella. As of February 2025, the PS5 has surpassed the PS4 in sales by 7% during their respective first 52 months on the market.
The momentum for Sony’s current-gen console comes as it recently reported shipping nearly 10 million units by the end of 2024, solidifying its lead over previous generations. ‘‘The fact that the PS5 is outperforming the PS4 shouldn’t come as a surprise,’’ Piscatella noted.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S continue to face challenges, as they are being outsold by the Xbox One by a margin of 19%. This downturn raises questions about the performance of Microsoft’s latest consoles in an increasingly competitive market.
In February 2025, the PS5 was recognized as the best-selling hardware platform in both unit sales and revenue, with Microsoft’s Xbox Series systems ranking a distant second. Sony’s ongoing success in hardware sales was further confirmed by its base model emerging as the month’s top-selling gaming accessory.
The PS5 Portal Remote Player – Midnight Black and the PS5 – Midnight Black also made the top five in consumer spending, finishing third and fifth, respectively. However, the reasons behind the sluggish sales of Xbox consoles remain unclear. Some analysts suggest that Microsoft’s strong presence in the PC gaming sector may affect console sales.
In a previous report, it was noted that Microsoft had shipped only 4.5 million units of its consoles combined between January and March 2024. Current data continues to illustrate the PS5’s dominance in the console sales segment, excluding its unit shipments.
