Paramount is Reportedly Developing a Sequel to Top Gun: Maverick
Paramount is reportedly in the early stages of developing a sequel to the successful action blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. According to insider sources, Ehren Kruger, co-writer of the first film, has been tapped to work on the script for the upcoming project.
The studio is also looking to bring back director Joseph Kosinski, who helmed Top Gun: Maverick, to take the reins of the sequel. It is expected that Tom Cruise, along with the film’s younger co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell, will reprise their roles, providing fans with more high-octane aerial action.
Discussions on the new script began towards the end of last year, but final approval will still be needed from Cruise and the production team. Paramount declined to comment on the matter when reached for confirmation.
This news comes shortly after Cruise announced his partnership with Warner Bros. to develop both franchises and original movies. While this deal allows Cruise to work with other studios like Paramount, it establishes Warner Bros. as his primary production partner. Furthermore, Cruise’s production company will have offices on the Warner Bros. lot.
Paramount’s parent company, Paramount Global, has also been making headlines lately, with reports suggesting that it is up for sale. Skydance Media, the production company behind Top Gun: Maverick, is said to be in the process of acquiring National Amusements, the holding company controlling Paramount Global.
Top Gun: Maverick was a massive hit for Paramount, grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. This success, along with Cruise’s involvement in the popular Mission: Impossible franchise, solidifies his position as a valuable asset for the studio. Currently, Cruise is busy working on the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible series.
As of now, there is no official release date or title for the Top Gun sequel. Updates on the project are expected in the coming months as the script development progresses.
