Pat McAfee to Face Gunther at WWE Backlash on May 10

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Pat McAfee is set to face off against “The Ring General” Gunther at WWE Backlash on May 10. The announcement came during WWE’s Monday Night Raw, where McAfee accepted a challenge from Gunther’s manager, Nick Aldis, who was filling in for Raw General Manager Adam Pearce.
“Me and Gunther, one-on-one, St. Louis Backlash. Deal,” McAfee said while standing atop the announcers’ table.
Last week on Monday Night Raw, Gunther attacked announcer Michael Cole, prompting McAfee to intervene. Gunther swiftly overpowered McAfee, locking him in a chokehold and leaving him in a vulnerable position.
Afterward, McAfee returned to the ring, addressing the crowd regarding Gunther’s suspension. McAfee shared his personal journey, stating, “I am a man that was not handed a lot in this life. I do not have more talent than anybody… I hope they say when I die that I gave back and left the world better than when I came into it.”
Following his loss of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, Gunther will seek to channel his frustrations into the upcoming match with McAfee. Gunther’s recent aggression, particularly after losing his title, adds another layer of intensity to their clash.
As the event approaches, speculation grows not only about McAfee’s preparation but also about potential future matchups, especially involving former champion Goldberg. Earlier segments hinted at a possible feud between Gunther and Goldberg, raising excitement for wrestling fans.
McAfee is known for his commentary roles but has some in-ring experience, facing opponents like Austin Theory and Baron Corbin. However, experts suggest that McAfee faces a daunting challenge in Gunther, who has recently showcased a more aggressive persona.
Fans are left wondering whether this match is a prelude to a bigger storyline, especially with reports suggesting that Goldberg’s retirement match could occur in the near future. Gunther’s response to McAfee’s acceptance of the match teased further drama, as he reacted with emojis on social media.
WWE Backlash will take place at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, and it promises to showcase high-stakes action as McAfee and Gunther enter the ring.
