Patti Smith Reveals Biological Father’s Identity in New Memoir
New York, NY – Patti Smith opened up about discovering the truth about her biological father in her new memoir, “Bread of Angels,” which was released on Tuesday. At 78 years old, Smith shared her emotional journey regarding her family history.
Smith, who was raised by her mother Beverly and a man named Grant, learned the unexpected truth on her 70th birthday. Previously, she had a conversation with her mother about genetics, but a hospitalization left her mother unable to clarify the matter. This led Smith and her sister Linda to take DNA tests in 2012, revealing they were only half-siblings and prompting Smith to believe her biological father was her mother’s Uncle Joe.
In her memoir, Smith described her reaction to the DNA results, saying, “We wept. The results put a great strain on my thought processes and for some time, I was unable to write.” Over time, she sought to learn more about her origins, eventually finding out her biological father was named Sidney and was “100% Ashkenazi.”
The revelation was made even more poignant by the role of her daughter in the discovery process. Smith’s eldest daughter, whom she put up for adoption at age 20 but later reunited with, helped her explore her past. “After learning of his name – Sidney – I knew he was my father before I saw his face,” Smith recalled. However, she discovered Sidney passed away in 1965.
Smith expressed the emotional impact of her findings, stating that writing the memoir provided her a way to honor her newfound truth without compromising the story she wanted to tell. She remarked, “If I didn’t write about it, then it felt like truth was compromised.”
In addition to discussing the discovery of her biological father, the memoir dives into themes of love and belonging. Smith reflected on her feelings regarding the revelations, saying, “I was sad to not be Grant’s biological daughter. But in the end, it doesn’t matter. Our love for each other eclipses blood.”
The memoir also explores Smith’s upbringing, her music career, and the influence of her late husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith. With its candid exploration of identity and familial connections, “Bread of Angels” is positioned as a significant addition to Smith’s literary legacy.
Smith’s previous memoir, “Just Kids,” received critical acclaim, establishing her as an influential voice in literature and music. This latest book promises to deepen the understanding of her complex life and artistry.
