Paul Walter Hauser Rises as Leading Man in ‘The Luckiest Man in America’

LOS ANGELES — Actor Paul Walter Hauser continues to solidify his place in Hollywood with his leading role in “The Luckiest Man in America,” which premiered in theaters this week. This film chronicles the unlikely tale of Michael Larson, the Ohio man who skillfully outsmarted the game show “Press Your Luck” in 1984, winning over $110,000 not through luck, but by memorizing patterns of the game board.
Hauser, known for his versatile performances that bridge comedy and drama, portrays Larson, a character whose strategic genius was overshadowed by the show’s producers’ panic. They hastily dubbed him the ‘luckiest man,’ a title that contrasts sharply with the reality of Larson’s meticulous preparation.
The film, directed by Samir Oliveros and co-written by Oliveros and Maggie Briggs, critiques the corporate narratives that exploit myths of luck and fortune. “The Luckiest Man in America” examines the media’s role in shaping public perception and highlights Larson’s seedy past through the lens of that fateful game show appearance.
Hauser’s breakout role came in 2017’s “I, Tonya,” where he portrayed Shawn Eckardt, the bodyguard who masterminded the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. His compelling performance captured audiences and critics alike. According to Variety, “Hauser’s portrayal gave depth to a character that was critical for the film’s dark comedic tone. He has since emerged as an actor to watch.”n
In 2018, Hauser further solidified his reputation with a role in Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman,” which earned Lee an Academy Award for its screenplay. The film tells the story of a Black police officer infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan, showcasing Hauser’s ability to navigate complex themes within the framework of powerful storytelling.
Later, he starred in Lee’s 2020 work, “Da 5 Bloods,” where a team of Vietnam veterans return to reconnect with their past. This film further exemplifies Hauser’s capacity to portray multifaceted characters in stories that explore deeper societal narratives. It’s available for streaming on Netflix.
Another significant role for Hauser was in Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” depicting the security guard wrongfully accused of a bombing during the Atlanta Olympics. This film illustrated Hauser’s ability to carry a film, taking lead as a tragic hero embroiled in media scrutiny.
Hauser also recently joined forces with Craig Gillespie again in Disney‘s “Cruella,” where he played a key role opposite Emma Stone. The film, which offers an imaginative take on the 101 Dalmatians villain, showcases Hauser’s adaptability and range as an actor. It is currently streaming on Disney+.
Fans can also find him in the Apple TV+ miniseries “Black Bird,” which garnered Hauser an Emmy Award. This gripping series, created by Dennis Lehane, follows a prisoner who makes a deal to befriend a serial killer to elicit a confession.
As he embarks on his latest journey with “The Luckiest Man in America,” Hauser continues to demonstrate a remarkable trajectory in his career, showcasing his skill in both comedic and dramatic performances, while amplifying stories that question societal norms and expectations.
