Pemi Choral Society Begins Rehearsals for 50th Anniversary Concerts
The 100-voice Pemigewasset Choral Society, also known as Pemi Choral, is set to start rehearsals for their upcoming 50th anniversary concerts. The rehearsals will be held at the Silver Center, located on the Plymouth State University campus. The society is thrilled to have the Laconia Putnam Fund as the sponsor for this concert series.
The special concerts, titled ‘Sweet Rivers,’ will take place on May 4th at the Colonial Theatre in Laconia and on May 5th at the Silver Center. The highlight of the performances will be a commissioned piece by renowned composer Moira Smiley. The composition is based on the poem ‘Flying’ written by the late PSU professor Jane Babin, who passed away from ALS in 2015.
Other pieces scheduled for the spring concert series include Shawn Kirshner’s ‘Sweet Rivers,’ John Rutter’s ‘As the Bridegroom to His Chosen,’ and Franz Schubert’s ‘Mass in G.’
The concert title, ‘Sweet Rivers,’ pays homage to the chorus’s name, which is derived from the Pemigewasset River that flows through this region. The word ‘Pemigewasset,’ originating from the Abenaki language, means ‘swift current coming from the side,’ signifying the merging of the Baker River into the Pemigewasset.
Pemi Choral Society welcomes new members from various communities in the Lakes Region, Central New Hampshire, and the White Mountains. Interested singers can join the non-auditioned, community chorus by attending the first three rehearsals before making a commitment. Registration for new members will begin at 6:15 p.m. on January 22nd at the Silver Center, right before the 7 p.m. rehearsal.
