A Penguin and a Teacher: An Unexpected Journey in ‘The Penguin Lessons’

LOS ANGELES, March 25, 2025 — In the upcoming film ‘The Penguin Lessons,’ Steve Coogan stars as Tom Michell, a British teacher navigating the tumultuous political landscape of 1976 Buenos Aires. Based on Michell’s memoir, the film portrays his unconventional bond with a rescued penguin named Juan Salvador amid Argentina‘s military coup.
The story begins as Tom, portrayed by Coogan, arrives in Argentina eager to teach English at an elite private school. However, his idealistic aspirations are soon overshadowed when a military coup leads to the disappearance of students and citizens alike.
Despite the surrounding chaos, Tom disregards political unrest and embarks on a weekend trip to Uruguay with his colleague, played by Bjorn Gustafsson. During their getaway, they stumble upon a grim scene of dead penguins washed up on the beach, yet one survives. Tom’s initial reluctance to intervene is overcome by his desire to impress a local woman, prompting him to smuggle the penguin back to Argentina.
“You can’t interfere with nature,” Tom initially insists with mock solemnity, but his plans quickly unravel as Juan Salvador refuses to leave his side, leading to a series of comic, yet heartwarming, complications.
Tom’s relationship with the penguin not only revitalizes his teaching career but also transforms his apathetic demeanor. The presence of Juan Salvador captivates his once-disinterested students, reviving their enthusiasm for learning and uplifting Tom’s spirits.
“I found myself stuck with a penguin that won’t leave me,” Tom humorously remarks in the film, reflecting on the unforeseen challenges and joys of their unique companionship.
As the plot unfolds, the film ventures into darker territory, addressing the abduction of a student, Sofia, who is seized right before Tom’s eyes during a government crackdown. His past experiences influence Tom’s initial indifference to political activism, but his bond with Juan Salvador ultimately drives him to brave activism.
The film’s screenplay, crafted by Jeff Pope and directed by Peter Cattaneo, seeks to blend lighthearted comedy with serious themes. Cattaneo, known for his work on ‘The Full Monty,’ expertly navigates these contrasting tones, creating moments of humor that are juxtaposed with the more somber realities of life in Argentina during this era.
“The story is about finding connection in unexpected places,” said Coogan. His portrayal of the cynical Tom offers viewers laughs while also exploring deeper themes of resilience and the importance of caring for one another.
Despite its attempts to balance humor with poignant storytelling, ‘The Penguin Lessons’ struggles in areas, veering between light-hearted scenes and significant dramatic moments. However, audiences are likely to find joy in its explorative messages and laughable escapades.
The film closes with real footage of Juan Salvador joyfully swimming in a pool, leaving the audience with a sense of warmth and a reminder of the impact of unexpected friendships. Audiences are encouraged to take a chance on the film when it releases this Friday, March 28.
