Philadelphia's Reforestation Hub: Turning Trees Into Carbon Smart Wood And Jobs

Philadelphia is seeing a transformative initiative unfold in its urban landscape, with the establishment of the Reforestation Hub aimed at repurposing fallen trees into valuable resources. The partnership between Philadelphia Parks & Rec, a startup from Washington D.C. named Cambium, and the local nonprofit PowerCorpsPHL has set the stage for a sustainable approach to tree utilization.

The Reforestation Hub goes beyond the typical fate of tree waste, diverting logs that would usually end up in landfills or organic recycling centers into Cambium’s innovative Carbon Smart Wood production. With each board foot of Carbon Smart Wood storing 5.23 pounds of carbon, the project is not only environmentally beneficial but also economically viable.

The hub’s efforts don’t stop at salvaging logs for wood production; a notable collaboration with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society resulted in the creation of tree stakes to support sapling growth—a testament to the diverse applications of the reclaimed wood.

Utilizing a software called Traece, the Reforestation Hub meticulously tracks the journey of each salvaged log, ensuring full transparency and accountability throughout the wood’s processing. This tool allows Cambium to keep a detailed record of the tree species, carbon sequestration levels, and processing history of each piece of Carbon Smart Wood.

Moreover, the initiative stands out for its impact on workforce development in the area, particularly through its engagement with PowerCorpsPHL. This nonprofit organization, under the leadership of Julia Hillengas, offers valuable training and job opportunities to young adults in the community, aligning with sustainability and climate resilience goals.

With PowerCorpsPHL members taking an active role in the daily operations of the Reforestation Hub, the initiative not only promotes environmental stewardship but also fosters long-term economic prospects for its participants. Through mentorship and hands-on experience, these individuals are gaining valuable skills that can lead to diverse career paths beyond the project.
