PARIS — Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli has been named the new creative director of Balenciaga, effective July 10. He will replace Demna, who is departing the brand after a successful ten-year tenure.

Piccioli, known for his vibrant colors and sculptural couture, previously led Valentino and has worked in the fashion industry for over 25 years. His first collection for Balenciaga is set to debut in October during Paris Fashion Week.

The announcement comes as Kering, the parent company of Balenciaga, aims to reinvigorate the brand following a decline in revenue. The brand became famous for its edgy streetwear under Demna, but Piccioli is expected to steer it towards haute couture and a more sophisticated audience.

“I want to embrace that community and the spirit of Balenciaga,” Piccioli said, indicating a blend of past traditions and his own vision. “It gives me the chance to shape a new version of the maison.”

Kering’s Francesca Bellettini described Piccioli as “one of the most talented and celebrated designers of today,” highlighting his mastery of haute couture as a significant asset for the brand.

Piccioli has expressed gratitude towards Demna for his impactful work at Balenciaga and aims to build on the established aesthetic. His approach includes respecting the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga, the brand’s founder.

With Balenciaga’s signature style rooted in innovation, Piccioli’s fresh direction will be closely watched in the fashion community. After Demna’s final haute couture collection on July 9, anticipation builds for what Piccioli will unveil.

“I couldn’t ask for a better passing of the torch,” Piccioli remarked in his statement, highlighting the importance of continuity in the brand’s evolution.
