Pittsburgh Airport Expands Solar Power Capacity to Enhance Resilience

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) announced plans to double its solar power footprint, enhancing its commitment to renewable energy. On April 29, 2025, airport officials revealed an ambitious expansion of its solar field, in collaboration with Duquesne Light Company and IMG Energy Solutions.
The project will add 11,216 high-efficiency solar panels, generating an additional 4.7 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2027 and will occupy 12 acres of land built over a closed landfill, an area unsuitable for other types of development.
The existing eight-acre solar array already features nearly 10,000 solar panels and has saved the airport over $1 million annually in electricity costs. The combined microgrid, which integrates a 23-MW gas-fired generator with solar power, has cut carbon emissions significantly, reducing approximately 5 million pounds each year.
“The expansion of more than 11,000 solar panels to PIT’s existing solar field is a fantastic step toward a more sustainable energy future for our region,” said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato. “I’m thrilled that our airport is an energy leader.”
PIT’s CEO, Christina Cassotis, emphasized that the airport’s microgrid ensures energy independence. “Projects like this continue to build our credibility in the aviation industry,” Cassotis stated. “We are maximizing the use of airport assets for the betterment of the region.”
The project not only highlights PIT’s energy strategy but also represents a significant public-private partnership in the region. Kevin Walker, president and CEO of Duquesne Light Company, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “By expanding access to clean energy for local homes and businesses, we’re helping to drive economic growth.”
In addition to the solar expansion, PIT has plans to produce synthetic aviation fuel on-site, potentially positioning it as the first airport to undertake such an initiative globally. This aligns with the airport’s broader strategy to enhance its energy portfolio and contribute to sustainable aviation.
Brian Guzek, Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Duquesne Light, remarked that the innovation at PIT showcases the type of public-private partnerships essential for regional growth. As the project moves forward, local leaders anticipate that the expanded solar capacity will significantly boost economic growth in the Pittsburgh area.
