Players Analyze Size of Battlefield Maps Over 15 Years
LOS ANGELES, CA — Fans of the Battlefield video game series have dedicated months to measuring and comparing map sizes in a collaborative effort organized by Reddit users ClaraTheRed and PENGUINonPC. The analysis covers multiplayer locations from games spanning the last 15 years, including Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield: Hardline, Battlefield 1, Battlefield 2042, and the latest, Battlefield 6.
This extensive project includes a side-by-side comparison of map sizes categorized by game mode and player count, complemented by color-coded horizontal bar graphs that illustrate EA’s approach to map dimensions over the years. ClaraTheRed revealed that this study took over 45 hours of work, culminating in a detailed breakdown of 72 maps across six games.
The findings indicate that Battlefield 6 does not measure up to the size of some of the series’ more expansive maps. While some maps, such as Iberian Offensive and Siege of Cairo, are comparable to those from Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 1, many larger maps fall into a medium-sized category. Notably, Battlefield 6’s largest map, Operation Firestorm, ranks 32nd in total shared playable area, significantly lower than expected.
This analysis omits some maps, such as those in 2018’s Battlefield V due to the difficulty in gathering relevant data. Additionally, gameplay elements like Levolution and environmental hazards can alter the actual play area mid-match, complicating direct comparisons.
Since the launch of Battlefield 6 less than a month ago, EA and Battlefield Studios have released updates, including the introduction of a new medium-sized map called Blackwell Fields and an upcoming map named Eastwood. Meanwhile, the standalone battle royale spin-off, REDSEC, also connects back to the Battlefield 6 experience.
With the community eagerly seeking larger maps, ClaraTheRed noted the goal of their analysis isn’t to complain about Battlefield 6’s map sizes, but rather to provide context about the evolution of map dimensions through the series. As the game continues to receive updates, players are likely to keep analyzing new maps as they are released.
