K-Pop Star Lisa Dazzles at Coachella with Tech-Infused Fashion

INDIO, California — Blackpink member Lisa made her highly anticipated solo debut at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday, captivating audiences with an avant-garde performance and stunning fashion choices.
Despite the sweltering California sun, Lisa started her act in a striking black puffer jacket, which she quickly shed to unveil a custom-designed 3D reptile bodysuit. The outfit, covered in intricate scales, was created by renowned designer Asher Levine. “She’s the reptilian villain,” Levine said in a video call, describing the unique concept. “It’s very creature couture.”
Levine, known for his imaginative creations for stars like Lady Gaga and Doja Cat, took on the task of designing Lisa’s eye-catching looks just weeks before the festival. He stated, “We’ve been going for a week and a half, day and night,” showcasing the effort behind the innovative designs.
To craft Lisa’s suit, Levine scanned her body for precise measurements and utilized a digital tailoring system to create a virtual prototype. Using artificial intelligence, he designed a geometric scale print before physically crafting each scale in his studio’s sculpture division. “We don’t have to kill animals anymore,” Levine emphasized, noting his aspiration to develop cruelty-free alternatives for exotic leathers.
Even with advanced technology, the production of the intricate costume demanded countless hours of meticulous labor, with detailed pieces like translucent scales taking up to 60 hours each to complete. Lisa’s second ensemble, a sheer catsuit with luminescent tendrils, was inspired by bioluminescent insects and glowing fungi. “What I like to do with my designs is create chimeric organisms,” Levine elaborated.
The luminescent tendrils, each equipped with fiber optic lighting, produced a mesmerizing glow as Lisa performed, demonstrating Levine’s commitment to merging nature with technology in fashion. “This is the future that *Blade Runner* predicted,” he said.
Creating functional yet striking performance attire presents challenges for Levine, who likens the process to designing for athletes. “Building these pieces for a performance is literally like building for a sports athlete,” he noted. Despite the uniqueness of Lisa’s ensembles, Levine has attracted similar avant-garde clients eager to push the boundaries of fashion.
