Pope Francis Vatican Interview On Migration

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump‘s plans to deport illegal migrants, calling them a “disgrace” if implemented. Speaking during an Italian TV interview from his Vatican residence, the pontiff criticized the potential policy, stating it would unfairly burden vulnerable individuals.

“That’s not right. That’s not how you solve problems,” Francis said, emphasizing his long-standing advocacy for migrant rights. He added that such actions would force “poor wretches that don’t have anything to foot the bill.”

Francis, who has consistently championed the rights of migrants, reiterated his stance during the interview, calling systematic efforts to drive away migrants a “grave sin.” He also referenced Trump’s 2016 campaign promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, stating, “A person who thinks only about building walls… and not of building bridges, is not Christian.”

The Pope’s comments come as Trump, now a candidate in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, has revived his hardline immigration policies. Francis declined to endorse any candidate, urging voters to choose “the lesser evil” based on their conscience.

During the interview, Francis also addressed broader migration issues, particularly in Europe. He noted that some southern European countries, such as Italy and Spain, face declining birth rates and labor shortages. “A good, well-thought-out migrant policy would help countries like Italy and Spain too,” he said.

On global conflicts, Francis expressed frustration over the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. “I don’t know why… it’s as if there was an international drive towards self-destruction,” he said, lamenting the difficulty of achieving peace.

Francis, 88, has led the Catholic Church since 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. His remarks continue to highlight his focus on social justice and humanitarian issues, particularly in the context of global migration and conflict.
