PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Rose Festival is set to begin Friday evening, May 23, with the opening of CityFair at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, accompanied by a fireworks display starting around 9:50 p.m. This festival is one of the city’s most significant annual events, featuring three weekends of parades and various festivities.

The Rose Festival, which has been celebrated for over a century, was officially designated as Portland’s festival in 2010. It includes a variety of events, from carnival rides to live music, providing entertainment for families and visitors through June 8.

CityFair, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday, will have multiple attractions including rides, games, and a variety of food options. Tickets are required for entry, although children under six and military personnel can attend for free. The fair is open during three weekends: May 23-26, May 30-June 1, and June 6-8.

In addition to CityFair, the festival will host several key parades. The Starlight Parade, taking place May 31, will feature illuminated floats and vibrant costumes. The Junior Parade on June 4 will showcase children’s creativity with decorated wagons and costumes, while the Grand Floral Parade, scheduled for June 7, celebrates the traditions of the festival with grand floral floats and performances.

Highlighting the festival this year is Tula-Tu, a baby elephant from the Oregon Zoo, who has been named the Grand Marshal of the Grand Floral Parade. She won’t be riding on a float but will be honored with a replica design during the parade.

Visitors are encouraged to use public transit to attend the festival events to avoid traffic and parking challenges. TriMet has suggested using MAX lines and bus routes for easy access to all major activities.

As the festival approaches its opening night, excitement is building among Portland residents and visitors alike. City officials anticipate that this year’s festivities will draw a large crowd, celebrating the city’s spirit and community.
