D.C. Prepares for Election Certification and Jimmy Carter’s State Funeral
WASHINGTON — Next week will be a busy one around the U.S. Capitol Complex, starting with Monday’s counting and certification of the 2024 presidential election and followed by the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. The funeral proceedings in D.C. will take place from Tuesday through Thursday, with numerous agencies stepping up security and D.C. police implementing extensive road closures.
Starting Friday at 8 p.m., several roads around the Capitol Complex will be closed to accommodate the high-profile events. Additional closures will take effect on Monday at 7 a.m. and continue through Thursday, with intermittent restrictions near the National Cathedral. The closures are part of a coordinated effort to ensure safety and smooth operations during the election certification and funeral services.
Independence Avenue from Washington Avenue SW to 2nd Street SE will be closed to vehicle traffic on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., while other streets near the Capitol will be closed intermittently. Emergency no-parking zones will also be enforced from Saturday through Thursday to facilitate the movement of official vehicles and dignitaries.
D.C. police have urged residents and visitors to plan ahead and use public transportation where possible.
