Questions Over Qualifications Prompt Resignation of Thabi Leoka from MTN SA and Anglo American Platinum Boards
Mining corporation Anglo American Platinum and telecommunications company MTN SA face scrutiny as questions arise over the qualifications of Thabi Leoka, resulting in her resignation from both boards.
On Monday, Anglo American Platinum announced that Leoka had stepped down from her position on the board to address concerns about her academic credentials and attend to her health. Shortly after, MTN SA made a similar statement, announcing her resignation from their board.
The 44-year-old economist’s resignation comes amid allegations that she may not possess a PhD from the London School of Economics as previously claimed.
Amplats and MTN SA have not taken responsibility for the oversight in their governance procedures that led to Leoka’s appointment without verifying her qualifications.
Both companies expressed regret over the situation and wished Leoka well in addressing the allegations and attending to her health.
The resignation of such a prominent figure brings into question the due diligence exercised by corporate boards in confirming the qualifications of individuals being appointed to important positions.
