Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale, Trailblazer for Women Presenters, Passes Away at 83
Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale, the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1 and the station’s longest-serving DJ, has sadly passed away at the age of 83. Nightingale’s family confirmed that she died on January 11 at her home in London after a short illness. She was a pioneer and a trailblazer who inspired many others.
Annie Nightingale joined BBC Radio 1 in 1970 and became the only woman on the line-up for 12 years. Her love for a wide range of music was well-known, as she championed genres from prog rock and punk to acid house and grime. Until late last year, Nightingale remained on air with her show Annie Nightingale Presents.
Aside from her radio career, Annie Nightingale also co-hosted the popular BBC Two music show The Old Grey Whistle Test. Tributes have been pouring in for Nightingale, with fellow DJ Annie Mac calling her a trailblazer and praising her for changing the face and sound of British TV and radio broadcasting.

Aled Haydn Jones, the head of BBC Radio 1, expressed devastation at the loss of Nightingale and acknowledged her contributions to the station and the music industry as a whole.
