Rashida Jones on Music Aspirations
Rashida Jones recently opened up about her relationship with music during a chat on the “Smartless” podcast. Despite a genuine love for it, she never thought about making music her career, mainly because of her famous dad, Quincy Jones.
She described her father as a “musical genius” and shared how that made her hesitant to follow in his footsteps. “That’s like the last thing I want to do, is try my hand at that,” she said. “But I love it. I have a deep ache for music, and I just don’t ever feel like I’m good enough to do it.”
Even though Rashida doesn’t pursue music professionally, she still enjoys it as a hobby. She mentioned that she sings and writes for fun and even performed as a backup singer on a couple of albums. In fact, she sang backup for Maroon 5 during their early years.
The conversation also highlighted how impressive her dad’s achievements are. Quincy Jones is known for producing classic albums, including Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the charity single, “We Are the World.” He has 28 Grammy awards, making him one of the most decorated producers in music history.
Podcast co-host Will Arnett shared his own experience visiting Quincy’s home, describing it as a museum filled with music accolades. He mentioned being astonished to see 40 platinum records for “Thriller” all framed together.
Additionally, Rashida reflected on her decision to direct a documentary about her dad, titled “Quincy.” She initially didn’t want to take on the project but eventually realized it was necessary. She said a friend encouraged her, reminding her that there’s a need to tell their family’s story.
