RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, spoke candidly about grief and technology at the Fortune Global Forum on Wednesday. He addressed the impact of losing his mother and how it shapes his views on innovation and investment.
During a discussion on investing strategies and the global economy, Dalio was asked if he would want a digital twin of his late mother to communicate with. He responded thoughtfully, saying, “I don’t know how it would affect the grieving process or my memory of her. I just don’t know.” The comment highlighted the complex interplay between loss and the potential of artificial intelligence.
Dalio, who lost his mother at age 19, recalled, “I couldn’t imagine ever laughing again. Now when I think of her, I smile.” This reflection illustrated his guiding principle of gratitude, which he believes is essential for personal and professional growth.
The Global Forum emphasized the importance of having clear principles that guide decision-making. H.E. Khalid A. Al-Falih, Saudi Arabia’s investment minister, shared the kingdom’s ambitions for rapid development, stating, “We’re building it today, not alone, but together with our global partners.”

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, speaking from hiding, called on the U.S. to support her country amid political turmoil, saying, “Venezuela is a disaster due to this socialist system.”
