Real Madrid Revamps Squad in Summer Transfer Window

Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid is undergoing significant changes as the summer transfer window opens. Carlo Ancelotti has stepped down as head coach, replaced by Xabi Alonso, while defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold have joined the team. Madrid is also pursuing a deal for Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras as they look to bounce back after a disappointing season where they claimed no titles.
The revamped Club World Cup commencing this month in the United States presents Madrid an opportunity to reclaim trophies under new management. As discussions around further strengthening the squad continue, key decisions rest with club president Florentino Perez and top executives.
Jose Angel Sanchez, the chief executive, is instrumental in negotiating deals, alongside Santiago Solari, the director of football, who has rejoined the club to aid in player acquisitions. Alonso has made it clear he intends to make impactful decisions for the squad. In his first news conference, he stated, “We have talked about things and they are agreed. I’m already here to make decisions and decide things.”
Madrid secured Alexander-Arnold for a fee of €10 million, ensuring he can compete in the Club World Cup, which coincides with Dani Carvajal’s potential return from injury. The club also made a club-record £50 million move for Huijsen, which addresses defensive concerns with several key players out.
While Madrid is confident of securing Carreras from Benfica for around €50 million, negotiations are reportedly complex due to Manchester United’s buy-back clause tied to the player. Other alternatives, including Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, are under consideration.
Additionally, Alonso has expressed a desire to strengthen the midfield position following Toni Kroos’ retirement and Luka Modric’s impending departure. “The squad is very good… but we want to improve,” Alonso remarked during his presentation.
Other club matters include a potential return for former Madrid midfielder Gonzalo Paz, who has performed well while on loan. Clubs are also monitoring backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and may explore options for extending his contract.
The left-back position is also under scrutiny with interests in Fran Garcia and uncertainty around Ferland Mendy’s fitness. Meanwhile, Rodrigo’s future remains in doubt as Premier League clubs have shown interest. Players like Jesus Vallejo and Lucas Vazquez are expected to leave after the Club World Cup, further shaping the team’s future.
With multiple personnel changes and a proactive transfer strategy, Madrid aims to rebuild as it faces an exciting season ahead.
