Rebecca Minkoff Joins ‘Real Housewives of New York City’ Amid Religious Discussions
Rebecca Minkoff, a designer known for her role in shaping the boho-chic aesthetic of the early 2000s, is now stepping into the world of reality television with a recurring role on the 15th season of “The Real Housewives of New York City” (RHONY). The new season premiered on October 1, 2023, on Bravo, marking Minkoff’s debut in reality TV.
The 42-year-old designer is appearing as a close friend of several cast members, including notable personalities such as the fashion designer and businesswoman Jenna Lyons, real estate agent Erin Lichy, and model-turned-entrepreneur Ubah Hassan. Minkoff’s involvement in the show comes amidst a significant reboot that replaced long-time cast members like Ramona Singer and Sonja Morgan.
Minkoff’s entry into RHONY is already generating buzz, particularly due to her personal background, including her upbringing in both the Jewish faith and Scientology. While discussing her religious beliefs, Minkoff has emphasized tolerance and the personal benefits she has derived from Scientology, such as stress management.
“We’re at a time and place where we can be divided and lead with hate and bigotry or we can just be tolerant of people’s beliefs,” Minkoff told The New York Post. She noted that Scientology has assisted her both personally and professionally, stating, “It’s helped me weather a lot of stress. That’s what I use it for.”
Minkoff’s began her fashion journey in New York in 1999, gaining prominence when actress Jenna Elfman wore her “I Love NY” T-shirt on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 2001. Her brand is known for its accessible luxury, with iconic items such as the Morning After Bag, which was a staple among celebrities during its heyday.
Despite her success, Minkoff has faced her share of scrutiny, from criticism of workplace conditions to comments on her products appearing in discount stores like Nordstrom Rack. According to Brynn Whitfield, a fellow RHONY cast member, there is ongoing speculation about Minkoff’s religious ties, which are anticipated to be a topic of discussion in the new season.
Minkoff’s move into reality TV appears to be well-received among her co-stars, with Lichy having initially introduced her to the show’s producers. Despite the potential for on-screen drama inherent to RHONY, Minkoff describes herself as “boring and nice” in comparison to some of the show’s regulars.
As the season progresses, viewers can expect to see new sides of Minkoff as she navigates the world of reality television while balancing her successful fashion brand and personal life with her husband, Gavin Bellour, and their four children.
