Gm Vehicle Recall Engine Issues

Detroit, MI — General Motors is recalling nearly 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential engine failure risk. The recall affects various models, including the 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL, all equipped with 6.2-liter V8 gas engines, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The automaker reported that the connecting rod and crankshaft engine parts may contain manufacturing defects, which could lead to significant engine damage and failure. This defect heightens the risk of a crash while driving. GM stated, “The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible,” in a recent press release.

The vehicles affected were built between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM has identified a dozen crashes and related injuries in the U.S., although most injuries reported were deemed minor or non-physical.

Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive notification letters starting June 9. Dealerships will inspect the engines, repairing or replacing them as necessary. Vehicles passing the inspection will also receive higher viscosity oil, new oil fill caps, and an oil filter replacement at no additional cost.

GM acknowledged that they implemented manufacturing improvements by June 1 last year to address the issues found in connecting rods and crankshafts. The global recall affects approximately 721,000 vehicles, expanding beyond the U.S. market.

The NHTSA began an investigation in January into 877,710 GM vehicles related to engine failures with these V8 engines. GM has previously closed three investigations into this issue since 2022 based on available safety field information, and they have identified over 28,000 field complaints related to engine failures.
