Pete Alonso Boston Red Sox Free Agency

BOSTON, MA — As the offseason progresses, the Boston Red Sox are eyeing potential free agents to strengthen their lineup, particularly in the power-hitting department. One name drawing attention is Pete Alonso, the New York Mets‘ first baseman who has announced his intention to opt out of the final year of his contract.

Alonso, who has emerged as one of the top sluggers in Major League Baseball since debuting in 2019, is seeking a long-term contract. With his stellar 2025 season, he is expected to attract numerous offers. The Red Sox are in need of a powerful hitter to fill a significant void left by Rafael Devers‘ trade earlier this year.

“We know we need more power in our lineup. Alonso checks a lot of boxes for us,” a source from the Red Sox indicated. “His ability to hit home runs and drive in runs could provide a much-needed boost.”

During his limited appearances at Fenway Park, Alonso has shown impressive performance, hitting three home runs and posting an OPS of .893 in just 20 games. This suggests he might thrive in the historic ballpark.

J.D. Martinez, who played with Alonso at the Mets and has experience with the Red Sox, could influence Alonso’s decision. “Boston would be a great place for him,” Martinez commented. “The fans here embrace players with talent and personality, and Pete has both.”

In his five seasons, Alonso has averaged 39 home runs and 111 RBIs per year while showing durability by playing in 158 games each season. His power bat could complement manager Alex Cora‘s preference for a lineup of consistent power hitters.

Despite potential challenges about splitting time between first base and designated hitter, Alonso prides himself on his defensive skills. He has excelled at scooping low throws, which has minimized errors on the field.

As the offseason unfolds, the Red Sox are also evaluating their roster and have not definitively committed to Triston Casas as their first baseman for the 2026 season. This has left the door open for Alonso, should he decide to join Boston.

While the Red Sox aim to improve their power-hitting capabilities, discussions about Alonso’s potential move to Boston will likely continue as negotiations heat up in the coming months. Until then, Alonso remains one of the most sought-after talents in free agency.
