LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Reese Witherspoon has revealed that a 2007 awards ceremony speech led to the end of her friendship with fellow Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet. The “Legally Blonde” star opened up about the incident in a recent interview, describing it as a moment that still “haunts” her.

Witherspoon, 48, shared the story while promoting her new film “You're Cordially Invited” with co-star Will Ferrell. She recounted being asked to present an award to a “serious, proper actress” at a British-themed ceremony. Mistaking the event for a roast, Witherspoon delivered jokes that fell flat, including a reference to laser hair removal.

“I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience,” Witherspoon told People magazine. “We’re not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore.”

Evidence from a 2007 fan site confirms Witherspoon was honoring Winslet at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards. The transcript shows Witherspoon’s speech included humorous anecdotes about Winslet moving into her neighborhood and requesting wine for a playdate.

“I always wanted to be a European movie star, wear giant sunglasses, elaborate neck scarves, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, and have savoir faire and gravitas,” Witherspoon said during the speech. She went on to praise Winslet’s fearlessness in acting roles, particularly referencing a nude scene in the film “Iris.”

While the two actresses appeared friendly at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards and later reunited to present at the 2016 Oscars, Witherspoon’s recent comments suggest their friendship never fully recovered from the awkward incident. Backstage photos from the 2016 ceremony show the pair smiling together, but Witherspoon maintains the fallout from her speech was permanent.

Representatives for both Witherspoon and Winslet have not commented on the matter. The story has sparked widespread discussion among fans, with many expressing surprise at the lasting impact of what Witherspoon described as a simple misunderstanding of the event’s tone.
