Publishers Clearing House Refund Check

WASHINGTON — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced Wednesday that it is sending more than $18 million in refunds to over 281,724 consumers harmed by misleading claims made by Publishers Clearing House (PCH). This settlement comes after an FTC complaint accused PCH of tricking customers into thinking they had to purchase products to enter or improve their chances of winning sweepstakes.

The FTC’s complaint highlighted that PCH used deceptive email subject lines that misled recipients into believing these emails were related to important official documents, such as tax forms. Only those customers who received and clicked on these emails and subsequently ordered products are eligible for the refund.

PCH has committed to pay $18.5 million in refunds while also making notable changes to its ecommerce practices. Affected consumers should cash their checks within 90 days, as stated on each check. The FTC emphasizes that it does not ask for payment or personal information to process refunds.

If someone is solicited to pay for getting an FTC refund, they are urged to report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

PCH issued a statement acknowledging the settlement, expressing their willingness to resolve the matter while continuing their operations. They noted, “Our Prize Patrol continues to award weekly prizes from coast to coast.” The company has also filed for Chapter 11 protection to focus on digital advertising-supported entertainment and eliminate its direct mail and online retail shopping.
