Regina Celebrates Deadpool with IMAX Theatre Name Change
Fans of Deadpool are in for a treat as the only IMAX theatre in Regina, Saskatchewan, is temporarily changing its name to honor the beloved character, Wade Wilson. This playful gesture coincides with the premiere of the latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine.
The naming ceremony took place at the Kramer IMAX Theatre, located in the Saskatchewan Science Centre. Science Centre CEO Sandy Baumgartner explained the significance of this event, stating, “Deadpool is Regina’s home-grown Super Hero, and it’s time we embrace that.” The theatre will officially be known as the Wade Wilson IMAX Theatre during the film’s run until August 8.
To celebrate, the theatre hosted a lively afternoon event where fans dressed in their best Deadpool cosplay. While star Ryan Reynolds didn’t make an appearance, local actor Style Dayne, who portrayed “Jeremy the pizza guy” in the original Deadpool film, was welcomed warmly by fans.
The festivities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a food truck offering “piping hot chimichangas,” a nod to Deadpool’s quirky personality. Additionally, a miniature statue of Deadpool was unveiled, with plans to give it away to a lucky ticket holder.
This isn’t the first instance of Deadpool making waves in Regina. Back in 2016, a local fan, Luke Oliver, even started a petition to get Deadpool on the city’s “Welcome to Regina” sign, though it didn’t gain much traction. The legacy of Deadpool, who hails from Regina in the film, continues to resonate with fans across Canada.
Comic book store owner Ethan White shared his thoughts on Deadpool’s popularity, pointing out that the character’s unique abilities and dark humor make him relatable. “He’s unhinged, and a lot of people can relate to that in a different way,” he said, emphasizing the appeal of having a Canadian superhero.
As the excitement builds for Deadpool & Wolverine’s release, fans are optimistic it will be a box office hit, especially given the surprise pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine, adding to the character’s already vibrant local culture.
