Rohit Bal, a celebrated and influential figure in Indian fashion, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024, at the age of 63. Known affectionately as “Gudda,” Bal was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and left an indelible mark on the Indian fashion industry.

Bal’s career, which spanned several decades, was marked by his extraordinary commitment to artistry and innovation. He was renowned for his unique vision that beautifully blended traditional Indian patterns with contemporary sensibilities, redefining the possibilities of Indian couture. His designs often featured motifs inspired by nature, such as lotus flowers and peacocks, which became iconic symbols of his label.

Born into a Kashmiri Pandit family in Srinagar on May 8, 1961, Bal launched his career in fashion designing in 1986 when he and his brother founded Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd. He made his independent collection debut in 1990 and went on to open flagship stores in several major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Bal was also recognized for his work in jewellery designing and his use of luxurious fabrics such as velvet and brocade. His designs appealed to all genders and were celebrated for their intricate detail and fine craftsmanship, reflecting the opulence and majesty of India.

Recently, Bal had been battling heart ailments and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Gurugram last December. Despite his health issues, he presented his final collection at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai just two weeks ago.

The FDCI expressed deep sadness over his passing, honoring his legacy of artistry, innovation, and forward-thinking. Bal’s influence will undoubtedly continue to shape Indian couture, inspiring designers and artists for generations to come.
