Rescue Operations Underway Following Heavy Rain in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – A man had to be rescued Wednesday morning after he drove his vehicle through high water on the West Side. San Antonio police reported that the man drove his Chevrolet SUV through a swollen Leon Creek on Commerce Street between Pinn and West Military Drive, near Highway 151.
The rescue occurred after a bystander called 911 around 8:10 a.m. The San Antonio Fire Department’s water rescue team responded to the scene. They used a ladder to get the man to safety. Fortunately, he was not injured.
Police indicated that this section of Leon Creek is known to flood, and residents are usually aware not to cross it. However, officials noted that the driver was unfamiliar with the area. The police have set up barricades to restrict access now.
This heavy rain marked the second consecutive day of rainfall in San Antonio, which has led to numerous low water crossing incidents and slick road conditions.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that he thought he could safely navigate the floodwaters after seeing a truck on the far side. Police clarified that the truck was likely making a U-turn and had not entered the water.
The fire department initially dispatched rescue boats to the scene but later decided on using a platform truck for the operation. Firefighters positioned the truck at the water’s edge and extended their ladder over to reach the man, who was on the roof of his SUV. He exited without even getting wet.
Authorities mentioned that it could take hours to retrieve the stranded vehicle. They are urging drivers to be alert during heavy rain, especially at nighttime when barricade crews may not be able to get there in time.
This story is developing as firefighters continue to monitor the situation across the area.
