Research Study Conducted in New York City to Assess Tick Exposure
A research study led by disease ecologist Maria Diuk-Wasser at Columbia University is underway in New York City and Western Long Island parks to evaluate tick exposure among residents.
The study aims to measure the presence of ticks in these urban and semi-urban environments during the summer season, when the risk of tick bites and Lyme disease is heightened.
While the likelihood of encountering ticks in the densely populated core of New York City is relatively low, areas such as urban forests and parklands present significant risks.
In an effort to better understand the behavioral patterns of residents in relation to tick exposure, participants are being enrolled in a comprehensive survey.
The survey will delve into the outdoor activities and behaviors of individuals, shedding light on whether their interactions with nature potentially increase their contact with ticks.
