Reservation Dogs Star Lily Gladstone Responds to Zahn McClarnon’s Controversial Opinion on Killers of the Flower Moon
Reservation Dogs star Lily Gladstone has come forward to defend her co-star Zahn McClarnon’s right to express her opinion about Martin Scorsese‘s film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
Gladstone won a Golden Globe for her role as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman targeted alongside her family by her husband for their oil inheritance on their Oklahoma reservation.
In a series of tweets, Jacobs shared her thoughts on the film, expressing her discomfort with watching it and describing it as filled with graphic depictions of the murders of Osage people.
Gladstone, who is friends with Jacobs, understands her reaction and believes it stems from the trauma that Native women experience when confronted with such historical atrocities.
She explains that while she personally took time to acclimate herself to the script, Native women viewing the film for the first time may have a different response due to the immediacy of the trauma.
Ultimately, Gladstone emphasizes that the Osage people’s reaction to the film is what matters most.
Despite Jacobs’ criticism of the film, she acknowledges Gladstone’s exceptional performance and calls for her to receive an Oscar for her portrayal.
This response from Gladstone comes in the wake of other critiques of the film, with some arguing that it presents a white perspective on the history of the Osage people.
Christopher Cote, the film’s Osage language consultant, expressed a desire for the movie to center on Mollie’s perspective and experiences.
Despite differing opinions, Killers of the Flower Moon has garnered praise for its representation of Indigenous actors and is expected to receive nominations at the upcoming Oscars.
