Byo Games East Los Angeles Retro Gaming Lounge

East Los Angeles, CA — In a world where forming connections is increasingly difficult, BYO Games emerges as a vibrant retro gaming lounge. Opened in 2022 by partners Joannalyn Villanueva and Chuck Solis, the lounge has become a local hub for gamers seeking community and enjoyment.

‘This is the kind of place my partner and I always dreamed of growing up,’ Villanueva, a Roosevelt High School alum, said. ‘It’s special to offer a space where friends and families of all ages can come together to play games.’

The cozy lounge attracts players from across the Eastside. On any given day, they gather for tournaments in popular games like ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.’ ‘Here, we’re all good friends; it feels like family,’ said Luis Hernandez, 31, a regular player. ‘There’s something for everyone, from casual games to the competitive scene.’

Despite its success in building community, BYO Games faces financial hurdles. Solis and Villanueva have struggled since launching the business and found themselves on the brink of closing multiple times. ‘Every setback has hit hard because people rely on us for a sense of community,’ Villanueva explained. The couple has explored various methods to stay afloat, including fundraisers and promotional campaigns.

‘Behind all of this, we’re doing anything we can to keep the doors open,’ Villanueva added. Recent months have seen them launch fundraising campaigns aimed at sustaining the dream they’ve built.

Not only does BYO Games aim to provide entertainment, but it also actively supports local youth. Currently, the lounge sponsors an esports team from the Collegiate Charter High School of Los Angeles. ‘Participating has helped me connect with classmates and explore new opportunities,’ said Johnny Cano, an 18-year-old student.

Through positive community engagement, Villanueva and Solis hope to expand their offerings in the future. With plans for gaming classes, they aim to invest in students and help the local gaming community flourish. Villanueva concluded, ‘If we can keep this space alive, all of our struggles will be worth it.’
